Prologue:
What is the Best Choice for a Powerless Civilian
Facing Great Power Politics and Military Action?
This Day 23 tour takes place amidst the shocking and
sensitive international situation of January 3rd, 2026,
following the U.S. military action in Venezuela
and the extradition of President Maduro.
In consideration of our readers' emotional capacity during these times,
we will focus on one country per day.
This record observes the unique suffering of each nation
and how these geopolitical events seep into
the daily lives and emotions of different lands.
Rather than judging right or wrong, we ask:
as powerless civilians, how do we observe,
protect ourselves from suffering,
and cultivate the equanimity to support one another?
This is not a manifesto for action,
but a record of finding an inner direction
as human beings in a shaking world.
1. Canary Islands — Why Does This Land Oppose Overtourism?
"Hola." A greeting in Spanish.
The Canary Islands, volcanic islands in the Atlantic,
are currently enduring the aftermath of Storm 'Francis'

and long-accumulated fatigue from anti-overtourism protests.
Fodor’s Travel Guide has even named them
a "No List" destination for 2026.
Following the recent military action in Venezuela,
the air on these islands—home to many Venezuelan immigrants—
is thick with complex emotions.
Some faces hold a cautious hope for the end of a dictatorship, while others carry a deep
anxiety over the violation of sovereignty. At this juncture, we recall César Manrique
(1919–1992), the artist and environmental thinker who shaped the identity of these
islands.
2. Sublimating the Tragedy of Destruction into Art

Having witnessed the horrors of the Spanish Civil War,
Manrique grew deeply skeptical of human destructiveness.
He left a successful career in New York to return to his home,
Lanzarote, to save it from reckless development.
Under the philosophy of "Harmony between Humans and Nature,"
he transformed barren volcanic landscapes into spaces of art and life.
His legacy provides the spiritual foundation for
'sustainable tourism' today.
"I want everyone to be able to see the beauty inherent in nature. Because
it is the only way to heal our souls." — César Manrique

Equanimity by Dingzeyu Li

Epilogue:
Cultivating Equanimity
in the Face of Adversity
In the teachings of Buddhism and Yoga, there is a wisdom:
"Cultivate friendliness toward the happy,
compassion for the suffering,
joy for the virtuous,
and equanimity toward the wicked."
This is not about labeling a specific event as "evil."
Rather, it is a message that even when we perceive darkness,
what we must cultivate is not anger or agitation,
but a clear, awakened, and equanimous mind.
This is the position and practice that every civilian
in this unstable world should strive to maintain.
Day 24 Teaser: Tomorrow, we will visit Chile,
a land in South America that is most sensitively reacting
to the impact of the Venezuelan crisis.
