Chile — Fire starts in the forest, but spreads to society

Prologue

When a fire starts in the forest, what do we look at?

This record is not a text

to explain a country's disaster

or to judge the right or wrong of a certain event.

When climate disasters and international politics

shake the breath of daily life with different textures,

it is a record to quietly observe

what we see, what we protect,

and with what kind of heart we can pass through this time

from the position of a powerless civilian.

1. The Scene: Crossroads of Disaster and Social Tension

Hola. It means “Hello” in Spanish.

As of January 2026, Chile is

experiencing climate disasters and social tensions simultaneously.

In the heatwave that has continued since late 2025,

large-scale wildfires spread in central and southern forest areas,

including Valparaíso.

With high temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius

and gusts called 'Diablo winds,'

the flames spread to private houses,

and thousands of victims occurred.

The Chilean government,

centered on the National Disaster Prevention and Response Agency (SENAPRED),

declared a national state of emergency

and designated early 2026 as a National Day of Mourning.

Social debate over tax reform bills

to raise recovery funds is also intensifying again.

Behind this disaster lie the ‘Mega Drought’

that has lasted for over 10 years

and a forest environment that has become extremely dry due to climate change.

2. Aftermath of the Venezuela Crisis

Chile is one of the countries

with the largest number of Venezuelan migrants in South America.

Currently, more than 500,000 residents

from Venezuela live as part of Chilean society.

After the U.S. military action in Venezuela,

different emotions are being expressed simultaneously

in major cities including Santiago.

Some Venezuelan exiles showed cautious expectations

for the possibility of ending the dictatorship,

while on the other hand,

protests criticizing the U.S. military intervention continued.

The Chilean government stated its principled position

that “the restoration of democracy must be peaceful and diplomatic,”

and at the same time, it is on high alert

for border management and mitigation of social tension

in preparation for the possibility of additional refugee movement.

As the aftermath of international politics

is added on top of a society already shaken by wildfires,

Chile's daily life is once again

placed on an unstable balance.

3. A Person Who Translated the Suffering of This Land into a Different Language

At this point, we recall a person

who contemplated the division and violence Chile has suffered

Termas Geométricas in Los Ríos, Chile

in a completely different language.

Humberto Maturana (1928–2021).

As a biologist, cognitive scientist, and philosopher,

he presented a new perspective on life and society

through the theory of ‘Autopoiesis (Self-production).’

Maturana did not see the violence and division of human society

as a problem of ideology or hostility,

but observed it as a collapse of relationships failing to acknowledge others.

Through his scholarship, he said that

humans are not inherently beings of competition,

but that society is maintained

when we can accept each other as legitimate beings.

He said:

“Love is not an emotion.

It is a biological capacity

to accept others as beings

as legitimate as oneself.”

Epilogue: Biological Capacity Called Love

Fire burns through the forest and passes,

but what sustains society afterward

is neither speed nor power,

but the relationship of looking at each other as legitimate beings.

As anger and fear grow,

the most practical choice we can make

is to not turn away from the situation

but to love each other without losing equanimity within it.

Maturana’s insight

makes us realize that just as Gemma becomes a mirror reflecting us,

we too must become mirrors

reflecting each other as we are.

Day 25 Preview: Cape Verde

Seems a Woman in Cape Verde
by Nick Fewings

Tomorrow, we leave for Cape Verde,

an altitude of the Atlantic.

Through the resilient life force that bloomed on a barren

 volcanic island,

let us once again confirm the unshakable equanimity within us.
